People think they have forever. That they’ll wake up and everything will be the same as yesterday but little do they know you aren’t promised tomorrow, you aren’t even promised a now. Tomorrow could be the day your life changes and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Never take your life for granted or; your home, family, loved ones, anything.
I woke up like any morning. My house full of noise and life. Mom had just gotten her taxes that afternoon so they were going shopping. I had to stay home watching movies because I was sick. Mom, dad and Tegan, my little sister, had gone shopping for a new laptop, food, supplies to build a dining room table and miscellaneous other things.
After dinner, which was chili dogs that mom and Tegan made, we started building the table. Even though I was sick, I also helped. We had finished the building process and called it a night. My siblings; Tegan, Connor and Joe, and I played video games for the next few hours till about 2 am. That’s when Joe wanted to go to bed. Since the roof leaked on his bed he had to sleep on the couch. Connor went to bed while Tegan and I went to the second floor to watch movies with mom.
We watched a movie and then it was bed time. Tegan begged and pleaded to sleep with me. I said no. Had I known what was about to happen I would have let her. Since I didn’t I sent her to her room and laid in my room reading a book. I finally fell asleep around 4 or 4:30 am.
At 5:30 my older brother, Joe, awoke to the couch he was sleeping on in flames. At first he tried to putting the fire out with his blanket. When he realized that wasn’t working he ran up to the third floor to wake up our parents. After he got them up mom went to the third floor balcony/roof. Dad and Joe went down stairs to the 2nd floor to get Connor. Once they had him on the roof dad and Joe tried coming back down for me and Tegan but the smoke was too much. My mom went back to grab her phone to call 911, again, and when she did she grabbed our littlest dog, Chairna. Our house was burning down while we were still in it.
While the rest of the family was trapped on the roof I woke up screaming. I couldn’t see or breathe. I was freaking out. Everything was a dark greyish black. While the smoke was filling my lungs and screaming I collapsed. My yelling woke up my sister, who started yelling for help as well. She had asthma so between that and smoke her screaming wasn’t loud. The only reason I could hear her was because she was in the room next to mine.
During our screaming my dad and Joe knew they had to get to us so they climbed down to the second floor balcony, jumped over 5 feet and down 6 feet to the hot tub house roof and then jumped off that, which was 15 feet tall. Running through the side yard to the front door my dad’s adrenaline was so high he was able to break through our 3 inch glass door. Shattering the glass with his bare shoulder. He didn’t even feel the snow falling on his bare back. He was focused on getting to us.
At this point the neighbors had called 911 at least a dozen times. The news telecasters were already there and the fire department had just gotten there. They were getting me from my room. They dropped me while passing me off from one to the other. So I pushed them away, climbing down myself. I wanted to go to my daddy but the fire fighters wouldn’t let me near my family. They had just gotten my brother and mother off the roof and she had our littlest dog with her. I turned around and saw my whole life on fire. They shoved me into the ambulance and I was not happy. They strapped me down rushing me to the hospital. I was alone in a dark room and no one I knew around me. So many strangers and detectives and doctors drawing blood, asking questions, and so much more.
My dad, brothers and mom were in the ambulance. The ER they took my mom to let her take our dog in even though there is a no animal policy. My dad ended being admitted into a hospital for 5 days. Connor and I were only there for a 2 days. Mom and Joe were there for only a couple hours. While I was alone waiting for my family I had a gut wrenching feeling. Something bad had happened. I just knew. Worst then my house burning and losing all my animals.
When my mom rolled in, in a wheel chair, I knew something had happened. I had heard from the doctors about my brother but nothing about my little sister. She told “She didn’t make it,” I was confused by what she said but not surprised. I knew it. I knew she hadn’t made it but didn’t make it any easier. Less than 5 hours before I was playing with my sister and now she was gone.
In a few hours I lost everything: my sister, my best friend, my life, my stuff, everything.
