Why Pedestrian Safety Needs To Be Improved

As the city of Fort Collins continues to grow, and more people visit Old Town, pedestrian safety becomes a more prominent issue. While pedestrians always have the right of way, motorists are the ones that decide if they follow that law being the ones in control of a couple ton metal machine.

Some of these tips for pedestrians include things like watching for a signal to cross, checking to make sure cars are stopped, and putting away electronic devices. The tips for motorists remind them to not stop in crosswalks, watch for pedestrians at intersections and when lights change. For both, CDOT recommends making eye contact to acknowledge each other and confirm it is safe to either cross or proceed through the intersection.

Their suggests start with teaching these things to a young age and keeping in mind that children all develop differently. The first suggestion has been around for a long time, looking left then right then left again before crossing. The article also suggests they put away any electronic devices to better pay attention to their surroundings.

With continued effort and reminders to people of all ages who do or don’t drive, pedestrian safety will hopefully continue to improve. A collision between a pedestrian and a motorist will forever have lasting mental impacts on both parties, even if the pedestrian was only sustained minor injures. The most important thing is to get people to use caution without awful events occurring.
