Time for College Athletes to get Paid

Universities rake in colossal profits off the backs of their athletes. This is something that many in the world of college athletics have come to recognize as a normal occurrence. While most division I athletes are granted a free education, most college athletes feel their free education is not enough. Scholarships are only guaranteed if the athletes themselves stay healthy. If faced with an injury, medical bills and tuition are left for student-athletes to pay out of pocket.

There are also no set guidelines on when a coach can revoke a scholarship even if promised otherwise. This means that once a player is injured, the scholarship can be terminated the following season. Right when the health benefits are needed most. For students from low-income families, this means the end of a football career as well as academic. Though this student may have sacrificed it all, for the benefit of their institution, tuition is still full price.

A newer model for NCAA’s wealthier conferences, allows for more autonomy in how players under scholarship receive tuition benefits when injured. It is a model written under a case to case basis. In California, universities that generate more than $10 million in media revenue, are required by law to guarantee scholarships and medical but still have a long way to go.
