Some Lesser Known Explorers of the Continental U.S.

When studying the famous explorers who came to North America to claim land, many names come to mind, including Ponce de Leon, Sir Walter Raleigh, Christopher Columbus, Giovanni da Verrazzano and Amerigo Vespucci. As students, we learned how they braved weather conditions, survived on plants and wildlife and created the trails they took. Traveling to a new land was dangerous. As an explorer, it was up to you to create a map, find shelter and provide protection. There was also the task of building homes and businesses as well as establishing the law.

America, however, was founded by more than those listed above. Many set out to find gold and other natural riches in America. But who were these lesser known explorers?
