I needed a hobby

In 1996 I came off a season working at a meat works leaving me unemployed for a while. An opportunity to start in a new IT firm came about and I got the job. I worked there for just over a year and a half until business started to falter and as the inexperienced compared to the others I lost my job.

I got some work as a builder’s labourer for a couple of months then as a plasterer’s labourer where I spent 9 month basically getting sworn at and working every weekend without pay. I hated plastering as a result.

A job I had previously applied for working as an on-site IT support technician came up again as the previous person employed didn’t workout. That was 1999 and fast forward to two years ago and I had spent a total of almost 18 years working in IT.

In all that time I had become incredibly jaded. I’d become completely frustrated and a bitter and angry man and my wife decided I needed a hobby. I’d always loved wood and so I purchased a few tools and made a small start with largely just some workshop projects. But then my wife discovered Pinterest and things kind of got out of hand. Ideas flowed but I wasn’t doing any real projects. What happened was IT was sapping my energy and I was just too tired to do anything even on the weekends. I’d completed a couple of projects with my largest being a couple of deck chairs which I love.

Then a couple of things happened in 2016 that advanced my woodworking hobby. In 2015 a company I had worked for and that we did contract work for decided to setup shop in town and despite their promise not to take their work off us they did. The boss said it would be alright but in June of that year he sat us down and told us that they had basically taken 40% of our work. So along with a colleague I took my chance and left IT. Despite wanting to become a plumbing apprentice no one got back to me and so I took a job as a postal delivery agent riding motorcycles for a living.

The other thing that happened was my wife became pregnant with our first and only child. This saw her spending an inordinate amount of time on Pinterest and that meant a few projects.

The first was of course a baby-change table. This was my best project and needed a lot of reverse engineering to work for us.

The second was an A-frame that we could hang baby toys from but he never seemed interested in that.

The third was a baby gate when little Noob started crawling.

My last big project was a Learning Tower that allows little Noob to get up at the bench and help Mum cook or wash dishes. It was my first project where I used template routing and it was my most rewarding project as well.

We just moved house and I’m currently having to setup my workshop again. I’ve got it mostly worked out and my current project is to make a gate to block off one area where little Noob has got out and run down the right of way driveway.

I’ve mellowed our so much since my change of job and I’ve got more time to work on my hobby and that suits me greatly.

I guess I need to get back onto Pinterest myself then eh.
