Why Music Shows Fail Musicians

Duncan Holzhall

Regardless of anyone’s role in the music industry puzzle, from artist to fan to executive and everyone in between, we can all come to an agreement on one item: we miss live shows. Going as far back as when Beethoven was making the lords and ladies swoon in the club to Moonlight Sonata, live performances have been hailed as the pinnacle of the music industry, and it’s easy to understand why. For artists, the energy of crowd feedback cannot be replicated in a studio format, and live shows allow them to venture outside of their records creatively, creating an ephemeral experience; in addition, touring has long been the primary income stream for many artists.

For fans, live shows give them the chance to interact with their favorite musicians outside of their headphones and connect with other concertgoers over fantastic solos and beer-stained-floors alike. Finally, for many on the back-end of the music business, live performances have provided them with fruitful and, until recently, sustainable careers. Even when you consider all of the positive aspects of the live show, there are still many ways in which they fail musicians.

Do you think that I would write an entire article complaining about live shows failing musicians and not provide any sort of solution? I am just as determined to put this puzzle together as anyone. Trackd is a social music platform that provides an antidote for each of the tummy aches above. As a decentralized digital platform, Trackd transcends the geographic limitations associated with live shows by connecting users across the world without the need for buying a $25 pitcher.

Not only does Trackd connect users with each other, the Discovery arm of the platform allows users to discover new acts without having to travel to a venue. On the “Create” side of Trackd, the ability to collaborate with other artists allows the capture and mixing of live audio ideas unlike any other platform, combining live collaboration with the flexibility of the recording studio (Trident Cloud, the company responsible for Trackd, is home to the very studio that recorded acts like The Beatles, David Bowie, Elton John, and Queen). Finally, with subscription and interaction tools like ChipIn and JumpIn, Trackd provides fans with perks as a reward for their support while providing artists with a meaningful stream of income that is resilient to many of the obstacles of the live show in the digital age.

To close out, live shows have been and should be an integral piece to the music industry puzzle. But with in-person performances having such a lion’s share of the music economy, the industry becomes less of a puzzle and more of a photograph. Trackd is here to provide the missing pieces for artists and fans.
