Client VPN with a Meraki Router

Set up in Meraki Cloud and on Windows 10

If you’ve ever struggled with setting up a VPN to allow remote workers to access data and services at their office, Meraki is here to save the day. Setting up a client VPN and maintaining it can be troublesome for small businesses. Moving to a Meraki Z series or MX series can quickly solve the difficulties associated with VPN’s for just about anyone.

This guide will assume you’ve installed your Meraki and that you’ve managed to get logged into the Meraki Cloud portal.

From the Meraki Cloud portal, we will go into Security & SD-WAN > Client VPN. Set the Client VPN Server to Enabled.

Next, we will set the IP subnet. Please notice that this is done in CIDR format. If your network IP range is using 192.168.1.x as most small offices are, you can use the next adjacent IP as I’ve done below. I’ve also opted to use Google’s DNS. Be sure to set a Shared Secret.

Notice that Meraki provides numerous authentication options including Meraki, RADIUS and Active Directory. I opted to go with setting up users in the Meraki Cloud as I only had a couple. If you need, you can take advantage of the others, but those will remain outside the scope of this quick start guide.

Click Add new user, provide a description (a name for example), an email address and a password. Set the user to authorized.

With that, you’re done. You’ve set up the server-side of the Client VPN settings.

Now that you’ve got your Meraki Cloud set up, you’ll want to set up your client workstation to connect to the Meraki. Most devices can be connected to a Meraki including Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.
