What is the UK government playing at with the Covid vaccine?

Short-term measures could cost us in the long run.

Hundreds of thousands of Britons have received their first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, and the Oxford/AstraZeneca one has been approved for use in the UK. Great news on both counts. But we don’t have enough of either, and the virus is tearing through the population at an alarming rate. We can’t keep up with the disease, and so the UK government is taking a gamble.

Because that’s what this is really about, isn’t it? Yes, things are at breaking point, and the idea of getting a little bit of immunity out there, to the most vulnerable, looks good in theory. But this wouldn’t be necessary if we’d not allowed things to get this bad in the first place. Meanwhile the rest of us can don our stiff upper lip and get back to work and school — less likely to die from Covid, but still exposed to the risks of sickness and long-term disability. And you can bet the government won’t have any sympathy for us then.
