Matching Head Coaches to Open Vacancies in the NBA

How much difference does an NBA coach actually make? Well, if you’re the Atlanta Hawks in 2021, a significant difference. Each season there is a coach “shake up” in the NBA. This season, we’ve witnessed in real time how a head coach can change a franchises culture and mental toughness with the Hawks mid-season switch. They fired Lloyd Pierce midway through the 2020–2021 season and promoted Nate McMillan. The team’s record with Lloyd Pierce was 63–120 and they have went 21–11 since Nate McMillan took over. The Hawks just beat the #1 seed 76ers and are now in the Eastern Conference Finals versus the Milwaukee Bucks.

Within the last few days we have seen two head coaches hired as Ime Udoka has been hired as the Boston Celtics head coach and Rick Carlisle has been hired as the Indiana Pacers head coach.
