Some Birds Are Not Meant to Be Caged

Is a moment of freedom worth more than a lifetime of misery?

Chester loved BiL, was utterly besotted with him. Even though he was free to fly around the house and even to fly outside sometimes, he always came back.

We loved our little yellow Iroh bird! He was part of our lives and a great thing for the children.

I recreated as best I could the environment I saw at BiL’s place, but it wasn’t wasn’t enough.

Motionless, Iroh spent hours staring out the window at the wide world, the tree tops, at other birds. Other times he’d land on wooden furniture and shred it with his sharp beak. We loved him still and only ever wanted him to be happy; happy with us.

I’d so wanted Iroh to bond with me! That was the dream. My little companion. Have you ever tried telling a bird who to bond with? Yeah. Doesn’t work. He took to Hubby: the only person in the house who didn’t want the bond, stuck with a devoted feather-friend on his shoulder, grooming his ear hair daily!

I can still remember how sweet it felt to have the precious weight of a tiny, living, breathing creature perched on my head or shoulder as I walked around the house.

Then one day the front door was left open. Not wide open, but enough.

Out the door he went, a yellow streak of feathers making his way to the sky he’d been pining after for the best part of a year.

We followed as quickly as we could, calling and cajoling, but he didn’t even look at us from his perch high in that tree across the road!
