Why I Want to Become a Freelance Virtual Assistant

For the last fifteen years I have worked in higher education and the tech industry supporting C-level executives and running their offices and lives.

For the most part, I have loved every minute of being their go-to person, problem solver, and jack of all trades. But I have grown weary with certain parts of my job, and honestly just do not want to do them anymore.

One of those things I do not want to do anymore is manage calendars. I am good at it and quick, but I just do not enjoy it anymore. It is time consuming and tedious. Every time an email pops up asking me to schedule a meeting, I cringe a little.

Another thing I do not want to do anymore is take meeting minutes. I love writing and have always enjoyed editing and proofing documents, but this is not the type of writing I want to do.

I want to flex my creative muscles and do the things that really interest me instead of just doing a job that pays the bills.

One of the things that I see over and over with businesses online that drives me crazy are posts and web content full of typos or poorly designed graphics.

Everything that we put online is a representation of ourselves and our businesses, and if we want people to take us seriously and trust us, then we need to be putting forth high quality, professional work.

Think about it, if you wanted to a hire a company or freelancer to do content creation for you, but their website and marketing materials were full of typos and grammatical errors, you wouldn’t hire them would you?

The same goes for graphics. Design work is not for everyone. Some people have a natural eye for it and some people do not, and that is okay. Poorly done graphics can have the same negative impact that bad content does — it is a turn off.

I’ve always loved creating content and design work so my goal as a freelance virtual assistant will be to help small businesses create dynamic content and graphics that help them achieve a professional image online that inspires potential clients to work with them.

Focusing on the creative stuff I love becomes a benefit for both my clients and me. It allows me to target and develop skills for work I am passionate about and this in-turn allows me to better serve my clients.

Completing the Emerging Media program is the first step in getting to a point where I can officially think about transitioning from an in-office executive assistant to a freelancer.

I am excited about the opportunity to be my own boss and focus on services I am passionate about but before I do that I want to be confident in my skills and knowledge so that my clients will have the utmost faith in my abilities to serve their small businesses.

Before I launch, I want to make sure that I am more than capable of delivering what I promise.

In addition to finishing my master’s program, I have been taking online classes and completing tutorials for content creation, design, and social media marketing best practices.

I am learning new software and applications so that I can diversify my portfolio and be flexible in offering my clients the right services and strategies for leveraging the social media platforms where their audiences live, and developing dynamic branding strategies for them.

Long-term, the goal is to leave my in-office job, be my own boss, and provide creative services to small business owners who do not want to it themselves, do not have the skills to do it, or do not have the funds to hire an in-house employee.

I want to handle the creative details related to the branding and marketing of small businesses in a digital world so that their owners can focus on their businesses to day-to-day operations.
